What you need to apply for citizenship

You can apply for citizenship:

  • You have been a legal permanent resident for the past 5 years; or
  • You have been a legal permanent resident for the last 3 years, you have been married to a U.S. citizen for those 3 years, and you continue to be married to that U.S. citizen;
  • You are a lawful permanent resident and your parents are U.S. citizens;
  • You have a military service record that qualifies you to become a citizen.

Children under 18 years of age may automatically become citizens when their parents become citizens. Please check with your local INS office for details.

If you do not fall into one of the categories described, but still believe you may be able to become a citizen, please consult your local INS office for more information.
